son [sʌn], child [tʃaɪld], mindful ['maɪndf(ǝ)l], warning ['wɔ:nɪŋ], afraid [ǝ'freɪd], touch [tʌtʃ]

After a time a son was born to the girl, and everywhere the girl went she carried the child. She called him Star-Boy. She often saw the large turnip near the tent of the Spider Man who weaved webs, but mindful of the Moon's warning, she was afraid to touch it.

One day (однажды), however (тем не менее), her wonder overcame her (ее любопытство пересилило ее; to overcome – побороть, победить, превозмочь, преодолеть, подавить), and she decided to see what was underneath the turnip (и она решила посмотреть, что же было под репой). She tried to pull it up but it stuck fast (она попыталась вытянуть ее, но та очень крепко сидела /в земле/; to stick – втыкать; торчать; держаться, липнуть), and she was unable to move it (и она не могла ее сдвинуть). Then two large cranes, flying from the east, came to her aid (тогда ей на помощь пришли два журавля, летящих с востока; crane – журавль, цапля), and catching the turnip with their long bills (и, схватив репу своими длинными клювами) they moved it from side to side (они качали ее из стороны в сторону; to move – двигать), loosened it, and pulled it up (высвободили = раскачали и вытащили ее; to loosen – ослаблять; развязывать, распускать; разрыхлять; loose – свободный; несвязанный; плохо прикрепленный; ненатянутый; болтающийся, шатающийся).

however [haʋ'evǝ], decide [dɪ'saɪd], underneath [,ʌndǝ'ni:θ], unable ['ʌn'eɪbl] move [mu:v]

One day, however, her wonder overcame her, and she decided to see what was underneath the turnip. She tried to pull it up but it stuck fast, and she was unable to move it. Then two large cranes, flying from the east, came to her aid, and catching the turnip with their long bills they moved it from side to side, loosened it, and pulled it up.

The girl looked through the hole, and saw the earth far beneath her (девушка посмотрела в дыру: «сквозь дыру» и увидела землю далеко внизу под собой). It was the same hole through which Morning Star had brought her to the sky (это была именно та самая дыра, через которую Утренняя Звезда принес ее на небо; to bring – приносить, приводить). She looked long through the hole (она долго смотрела в дыру), and she saw the camps of her people, the Blackfeet (и она увидела селения: «лагеря» своего народа – Черноногих), on the plains far below (на равнинах далеко внизу).

hole [hǝʋl], beneath [bɪ'ni:θ], through [θru:], brought [brɔ:t], below [bɪ'lǝʋ]

The girl looked through the hole, and saw the earth far beneath her. It was the same hole through which Morning Star had brought her to the sky. She looked long through the hole, and she saw the camps of her people, the Blackfeet, on the plains far below.

What she saw was well known to her (то, что она увидела, было ей хорошо знакомо). It was summer on the prairies (в прериях было лето). The men were playing games (мужчины во что-то играли: «играли в игры»); the women were tanning skins (женщины дубили = обрабатывали шкуры) or gathering berries on the rolling hills (или собирали ягоды на пологих холмах; rolling – покрытый пологими холмами: «катящийся/перекатывающийся»). She grew very lonely as she watched (ей стало очень одиноко, пока она смотрела: to grow – делаться, становиться /каким-либо/), for she wanted to be back on the green prairies with her own people (потому что ей хотелось вернуться на зеленые прерии к своему /собственному/ народу), and when she turned away to go home she was crying bitterly (и когда она повернулась/отвернулась, чтобы идти домой, по ее щекам текли слезы: «она горько плакала»).

women ['wɪmɪn], gather ['ɡæðǝ], grew [ɡru:], lonely ['lǝʋnlɪ]

What she saw was well known to her. It was summer on the prairies. The men were playing games; the women were tanning skins or gathering berries on the rolling hills. She grew very lonely as she watched, for she wanted to be back on the green prairies with her own people, and when she turned away to go home she was crying bitterly.

When she reached home (когда она добралась до дома; to reach – достигать, доходить), Morning Star and his Mother the Moon were waiting for her (Утренняя Звезда и его Мать Луна ждали ее). Morning Star at once knew from her face what had happened (Утренняя Звезда сразу понял по ее лицу, что случилось; to know – узнавать; понимать), and he said, “You have pulled up the sacred turnip (ты вытянула запретную репу; sacred – священный, святой).” When she did not answer (когда же она не ответила), the Moon said (Луна сказала), “I warned you not to dig it up (я предупреждала/предостерегала чтобы ты не выкапывала ее), because I love Star-Boy and I do not wish to part with him (потому что я люблю Звездного Мальчика и не хочу разлучаться с ним).”

reach [ri:tʃ], once [wʌns], sacred ['seɪkrɪd], answer ['ɑ:nsǝ], because [bɪ'kɒz]

When she reached home, Morning Star and his Mother the Moon were waiting for her. Morning Star at once knew from her face what had happened, and he said, “You have pulled up the sacred turnip.” When she did not answer, the Moon said, “I warned you not to dig it up, because I love Star-Boy and I do not wish to part with him.”

It was day (дело было днем: «это был день»), and the Sun was away on his long journey (и Солнце ушел в свое долгое путешествие). When he came home in the evening (когда вечером он пришел домой), he asked what was the matter with his daughter (он спросил, что случилось с его дочкой) for she looked sad and troubled (потому что она выглядела печальной и обеспокоенной). And the girl answered that she was lonely (и девушка ответила, что ей одиноко) because she had looked down that day upon her people on the plains (потому что в тот день она посмотрела /с небес/ на свой народ на равнинах; plain – равнина, степь, прерия).

journey ['ʤɜ:nɪ], daughter ['dɔ:tǝ], troubled ['trʌbld], people ['pi:pl]

It was day, and the Sun was away on his long journey. When he came home in the evening, he asked what was the matter with his daughter for she looked sad and troubled. And the girl answered that she was lonely because she had looked down that day upon her people on the plains.

Then the Sun was very angry (после чего Солнце рассердился; be angry with smb. – сердиться на кого-либо; angry – рассерженный, сердитый, разгневанный), and said to Morning Star, “If she has disobeyed, she must go back to her people (если она ослушалась, она должна вернуться назад к своим людям = к своей родне). She cannot live here (здесь она жить не может).” Morning Star and the Moon pleaded with the Sun to let her remain (Утренняя Звезда и Луна умоляли Солнце разрешить ей остаться; to plead – просить, умолять; защищать в суде), but the Sun said that it was better that she should go back to the prairies (но Солнце сказал, что ей лучше вернуться в прерии), for she would no longer be happy in the sky (потому как на небе она больше не будет счастлива).

disobey [,dɪsǝ'beɪ], plead [pli:d], should [ʃʋd], sky [skaɪ]

Then the Sun was very angry, and said to Morning Star, “If she has disobeyed, she must go back to her people. She cannot live here.” Morning Star and the Moon pleaded with the Sun to let her remain, but the Sun said that it was better that she should go back to the prairies, for she would no longer be happy in the sky.

Then Morning Star led the girl to the house of the Spider Man (после этого Утренняя Звезда привел девушку в дом Человека-Паука; to lead – вести) who had weaved the web that had drawn her up to the sky (который сплел паутину, которая затащила ее на небо = с помощью которой ее затащили на небо; to draw – тянуть, тащить). He placed Star-Boy on her breast (он положил Звездного Мальчика ей на грудь), and wrapped around them both a bright robe (и обернул их обоих яркой мантией; to wrap – окутывать, обертывать; wrap – шаль, платок). Then he bade them farewell (после этого он с ними попрощался; to bid farewell – прощаться), saying (говоря), “We will let you down (мы спустим вас вниз) where your people on the plains can see you as you fall (где ваши люди в степи увидят, как вы спускаетесь; to fall – падать).” Then the Spider Man with his web let her down as she had come (потом Человек-Паук спустил ее на своей паутине, так же = тем же способом, как она поднялась /раньше/ наверх), through the hole in the sky (через отверстие в небе).

house [haʋs], breast [brest], bright [braɪt], wrap [ræp], around [ǝ'rǝʋnd], both [bǝʋθ], farewell [,feǝ'wel]

Then Morning Star led the girl to the house of the Spider Man who had weaved the web that had drawn her up to the sky. He placed Star-Boy on her breast, and wrapped around them both a bright robe. Then he bade them farewell, saying, “We will let you down where your people on the plains can see you as you fall.” Then the Spider Man with his web let her down as she had come, through the hole in the sky.

It was a hot still evening in midsummer (был жаркий тихий вечер середины лета) when the girl returned to her people (когда девушка вернулась к своему народу). Many of the people were outside their tents (многие люди повыходили из своих вигвамов: «были снаружи их вигвамов»), and they saw a bright light in the northern sky (и они увидели яркий свет в северном небе). They watched it slowly drop until it reached the ground (они смотрели, как он медленно опускался, пока не достиг земли; to drop – капать; падать). They thought it was a shooting star (они подумали, что это падающая звезда; to shoot – стрелять; внезапно появиться, пронестись, промелькнуть, промчаться).

evening ['i:vnɪŋ], bright [braɪt], light [laɪt], northern ['nɔ:ð(ǝ)n], ground [ɡraʋnd], until [ǝn'tɪl]

It was a hot still evening in midsummer when the girl returned to her people. Many of the people were outside their tents, and they saw a bright light in the northern sky. They watched it slowly drop until it reached the ground. They thought it was a shooting star.

They ran to the place where the bright light fell (они побежали к тому месту, где упала эта яркая звезда: «яркий свет»), and there they found a strange bundle (и обнаружили там странный узел; to find – находить, обнаруживать; bundle – узел, связка, пачка, вязанка, пучок), inside of which were the woman and her child (внутри которого была женщина и ее ребенок). Her parents knew her (ее родители узнали ее; to know – знать, узнавать), and she returned with them to their home (и она вернулась с ними в их дом) and lived with them (и жила с ними). But she was never happy (но она никогда не была счастлива; never – никогда; вовсе не, никоим образом).

found [faʋnd], bundle ['bʌndl], child [tʃaɪld], never ['nevǝ]

They ran to the place where the bright light fell, and there they found a strange bundle, inside of which were the woman and her child. Her parents knew her, and she returned with them to their home and lived with them. But she was never happy.

Often she took Star-Boy to the top of a high hill in the west (она часто брала Звездного Мальчика с собой на вершину высокого холма на западе), where she sat and mourned for her home in the sky (где она сидела и горевала по своему дому на небесах; to sit – сидеть; to mourn – скорбеть, оплакивать, горевать, печалиться). And daily she watched Morning Star rise from the plains (и каждый день она наблюдала, как из-за равнины восходит Утренняя Звезда).

often ['ɒf(ǝ)n], high [haɪ], mourn [mɔ:n], watch [wɒtʃ], rise [raɪz]

Often she took Star-Boy to the top of a high hill in the west, where she sat and mourned for her home in the sky. And daily she watched Morning Star rise from the plains.

Once she begged him to take her back to the country of the stars (однажды она стала умолять его, чтобы забрал ее назад в страну звезд; to beg – просить, умолять), but he answered (но он ответил), “You disobeyed (ты ослушалась), and therefore I cannot take you back (и поэтому я не могу взять тебя обратно). Your sin is the cause of your sorrow (твой грех – причина твоего горя; sin – грех, проступок), and it has brought great trouble to you and your people (и он принес тебе и твоему народу много неприятностей; to bring – приносить; trouble – беда, горе, неприятности, беспокойство, волнение, тревога).”

country ['kʌntrɪ], disobey [,dɪsǝ'beɪ], therefore ['ðeǝfɔ:], cause [kɔ:z], trouble ['trʌbl]

Once she begged him to take her back to the country of the stars, but he answered, “You disobeyed, and therefore I cannot take you back. Your sin is the cause of your sorrow, and it has brought great trouble to you and your people.”

So the Star-woman lived alone and unhappy upon the earth because she had disobeyed (так Звездная женщина жила одинокая и несчастная на земле из-за того, что ослушалась). After a time she died, and her son, Star-Boy, was left alone (спустя какое-то время она умерла, и ее сын – Звездный Мальчик – остался один: «был оставлен один»; to leave – оставлять, покидать). Although born in the home of the Sun (хотя он родился в доме самого Солнца), he was very poor (он был очень беден). He had little of the world's goods (у него почти не было никаких благ этого мира: «никакого имущества»; goods – вещи, имущество, товары), and but few clothes to wear (кроме немногой одежды, которую он носил: «чтобы носить»).

earth [ɜ:θ], because [bɪ'kɒz], although [ɔ:l'ðǝʋ], poor [pʋǝ], world [wɜ:ld], wear [weǝ]

So the Star-woman lived alone and unhappy upon the earth because she had disobeyed. After a time she died, and her son, Star-Boy, was left alone. Although born in the home of the Sun, he was very poor. He had little of the world's goods, and but few clothes to wear.

He was so timid that he never played with other children (он был таким робким, что никогда не играл с другими детьми), and he lived much by himself (и много времени проводил в одиночестве: «жил сам по себе»). On his face was strange scar which became more marked as he grew older (на его лице был странный шрам, который стал еще заметнее, когда он вырос; to become – становиться; to grow – расти). Because of this and his shy and timid ways (из-за этого и /из-за/ его застенчивости и робости: «застенчивых и робких манер»; way – путь, дорога; манера, привычка, образ действия), he was laughed at by everybody (над ним все смеялись); other boys stoned him (другие мальчишки бросались в него камнями) and abused him and called him Scarface (обижали его и обзывали Меченым: «лицом со шрамом»; scar – шрам).

timid ['tɪmɪd], strange [streɪnʤ], mark [mɑ:k], laugh [lɑ:f], abuse /глагол/[ǝ'bju:z]

He was so timid that he never played with other children, and he lived much by himself. On his face was strange scar which became more marked as he grew older. Because of this and his shy and timid ways, he was laughed at by everybody; other boys stoned him and abused him and called him Scarface.

When Star-Boy became a man he loved a girl of his own people (когда Звездный Мальчик вырос: «стал мужчиной», он полюбил девушку из своего народа; own – свой, собственный, родной). She was very beautiful (она была очень красивой), and many young men wanted to marry her (и многие молодые люди хотели жениться на ней; to marry smb. – выходить замуж за кого-либо, жениться на ком-либо), but she refused them all (но она отказывала им всем). She told Star-Boy that she would not marry him (она сказала Звездному Мальчику, что не выйдет за него замуж; to tell – говорить) until he removed the strange scar from his face (до тех пор, пока он не избавится от странного шрама на лице; to remove – удалять, устранять; снимать).

beautiful ['bju:tǝfǝl], young [jʌŋ], remove [rɪ'mu:v], strange [streɪnʤ]

When Star-Boy became a man he loved a girl of his own people. She was very beautiful, and many young men wanted to marry her, but she removed them all. She told Star-Boy that she would not marry him until he removed the strange scar from his face.

He was much troubled by this answer (он был очень озабочен таким ответом), and he talked about it to an old medicine-woman who knew many things (и поговорил об этом со старой знахаркой, которая слыла очень знающей: «которая знала много вещей»). The medicine-woman told him that the scar had been placed on his face by the Sun (знахарка сказала ему, что шрам на его лице появился из-за Солнца: «шрам был помещен на его лицо Солнцем»), and that only the Sun himself could take it off (и что только сам Солнце может его убрать). So he decided to go to the home of the Sun (поэтому он решил пойти в дом Солнца).

trouble ['trʌbl], medicine ['meds(ǝ)n], answer ['ɑ:nsǝ], old [ǝʋld]

He was much troubled by this answer, and he talked about it to an old medicine-woman who knew many things. The medicine-woman told him that the scar had been placed on his face by the Sun, and that only the Sun himself could take it off. So he decided to go to the home of the Sun.

He went across the prairies and over the mountains for many days (много дней он шел через степи и горы; to go across – пересекать), meeting many dangers and suffering great hardships (смотря в лицо многим опасностям и лишениям: «встречаясь со многими опасностями и переживая большие лишения»; to suffer – страдать; испытывать, претерпевать). At last he came to the Great Water in the West – the Pacific Ocean (наконец он пришел к Великой Воде на западе – Тихому океану). For three days and nights he lay on the sand fasting and praying to the Sun God (три дня и три ночи лежал он на песке, ничего не ел и молился Богу-Солнцу; to lie – лежать; to fast – поститься).

mountain ['maʋntɪn], danger ['deɪnʤǝ], hardship ['hɑ:dʃɪp], great [ɡreɪt]

He went across the prairies and over the mountains for many days, meeting many dangers and suffering great hardships. At last he came to the Great Water in the West – the Pacific Ocean. For three days and nights he lay on the sand fasting and praying to the Sun God.

On the evening of the fourth day he saw a bright trail leading across the water to the west (вечером четвертого дня он увидел яркую дорожку, убегающую к западу по воде; trail – тропа, тропинка, след; to lead – вести, быть проводником, приводить; across – поперек). He ran along this path across the water (он побежал по этой тропинке прямо по воде; to run along – бежать по, вдоль) until he came at last to the home of the Sun (пока, наконец, не пришел к дому Солнца), where he hid himself and waited (где спрятался и стал ждать; to hide – прятать). Early next morning the Sun came out of his tent, ready for his day's journey (на следующий день рано утром Солнце вышел из своего шатра, готовый к своему дневному путешествию).

fourth [fɔ:θ], path [pɑ:θ], early ['ɜ:lɪ], ready ['redɪ]

On the evening of the fourth day he saw a bright trail leading across the water to the west. He ran along this path across the water until he came at last to the home of the Sun, where he hid himself and waited. Early next morning the Sun came out of his tent, ready for his day's journey.

He saw Star-Boy (он увидел Звездного Mальчика), but he did not know him (но не узнал его), for Star-Boy had grown since he left the country of the stars (потому что Звездный Мальчик вырос с тех пор, как покинул страну звезд; to grow – расти). The Sun was angry when he saw a creature from the earth (Солнце рассвирепел, когда он увидел человека: «существо» с Земли; creature – создание, творение, человек), and calling his wife, the Moon, he said (и, позвав свою жену, Луну, он сказал), “We will kill him (мы убьем его), for he comes from a good-for-nothing race (потому что он происходит от ни на что не годного народа; race – раса, племя, народ).”

know [nǝʋ], creature ['kri:tʃǝ], good-for-nothing ['ɡʋdfǝ,nʌθɪŋ]

He saw Star-Boy, but he did not know him, for Star-Boy had grown since he left the country of the stars. The Sun was angry when he saw a creature from the earth, and calling his wife, the Moon, he said, “We will kill him, for he comes from a good-for-nothing race.”

But the Moon, being kind, prevented it and saved the boy's life (но Луна, добрая по натуре: «будучи доброй», не допустила этого и спасла мальчику жизнь; to prevent – предотвращать, предупреждать, не допускать). Then Morning Star, the boy's father, handsome and bright, came from his tent (после этого Утренняя Звезда, отец мальчика, красивый и яркий, вышел из своего вигвама). He recognized his child (он признал своего ребенка; to recognize – узнавать, признавать). And, after the usual fashion in the sky (и, по заведенному на небе обычаю; fashion – манера, обычай, мода, стиль; usual – обыкновенный, обычный), he brought dried sweet-grass (он принес высушенной душистой травы; to bring – приносить) and burned it so that the smoke curled around the boy (поджег ее и окурил мальчика: «и сжег ее так, чтобы дым окутал мальчика»; to curl – клубиться /о дыме/; curl – кольцо /дыма/, локон, завиток) and cleansed him from the dust of the earth (и очистил его от всего тленного и земного: «от пыли/праха земли»).

kind [kaɪnd], handsome ['hæn(d)sǝm], brought [brɔ:t], cleanse [klenz]

But the Moon, being kind, prevented it and saved the boy's life. Then Morning Star, the boy's father, handsome and bright, came from his tent. He recognized his child. And, after the usual fashion in the sky, he brought dried sweet-grass and burned it so that the smoke curled around the boy and cleansed him from the dust of the earth.

Then he brought him to his father and mother (затем он привел его к своему отцу и матери), the Sun and the Moon (Солнцу и Луне), and told them who the boy was (и сказал им, кто этот мальчик; to tell – говорить, рассказывать). And Star-Boy told his story of his long journey (а Звездный Мальчик рассказал им историю своего долгого путешествия), and of the marriage refusal of the girl he loved (и о том, что девушка, которую он любит, отказалась выходить за него замуж; marriage refusal – отказ на предложение о женитьбе/замужестве; to refuse – отвергать, отказывать; отклонять) because of the scar on his face (из-за шрама на его лице). And they took pity on him, and promised to help him (и они пожалели его и пообещали помочь; pity – жалость, сострадание; to pity smb./to take pity on smb. – жалеть кого-либо).

journey ['ʤɜ:nɪ], marriage ['mærɪʤ], refusal [rɪ'fju:z(ǝ)l], pity ['pɪtɪ], promise ['prɒmɪs]

Then he brought him to his father and mother, the Sun and the Moon, and told them who the boy was. And Star-Boy told his story of his long journey, and of the marriage refusal of the girl he loved because of the scar on his face. And they took pity on him, and promised to help him.

Star-Boy lived in the home of the Sun and the Moon with Morning Star (Звездный Мальчик жил с Утренней Звездой в доме Солнца и Луны). Once he went hunting and killed seven large birds (однажды он пошел на охоту и убил семь больших птиц) which had threatened the life of his father (которые угрожали жизни его отца). He gave four of the dead birds to the Sun and three to the Moon (четырех убитых птиц он отдал Солнцу, а трех – Луне; to give – давать). And the Sun, glad to be rid of these pests (и Солнце, довольный, что избавился от этих врагов; to be rid of smb. – быть избавленным от кого-либо; pest – вредитель, паразит; /уст./ мор, чума), resolved to pay him well for his work (решил щедро заплатить за его работу).

large [lɑ:ʤ], threaten ['θretn], resolve [rɪ'zɒlv], work [wɜ:k]

Star-Boy lived in the home of the Sun and the Moon with Morning Star. Once he went hunting and killed seven large birds which had threatened the life of his father. He gave four of the dead birds to the Sun and three to the Moon. And the Sun, glad to be rid of these pests, resolved to pay him well for his work.

As a reward (в награду: «как награду/в качестве вознаграждения»), he took the scar from his face (он очистил его лицо от шрама: «он убрал шрам с его лица»), as the medicine-woman had said (как и сказала знахарка). And he made him his messenger to the Blackfeet people on the Canadian plains (и он сделал его посланником к народу Черноногих на канадских равнинах), and promised that if they would give a festival in his honour once a year (и пообещал, что если раз в год они будут устраивать праздник в его честь; to give – давать), he would heal their sick (он будет исцелять их больных). The festival was to be known as the Sun Dance (празднество должно было называться: «стать известным как» Танец Солнца).

reward [rɪ'wɔ:d], messenger ['mesɪnʤǝ], festival ['festɪv(ǝ)l], honour ['ɒnǝ], dance [dɑ:ns]

As a reward, he took the scar from his face, as the medicine-woman had said. And he made him his messenger to the Blackfeet people on the Canadian plains, and promised that if they would give a festival in his honour once a year, he would heal their sick. The festival was to be known as the Sun Dance.

He taught Star-Boy the secrets of the dance (он научил Звездного Мальчика секретам этого танца; to teach – обучать) and the songs to be used in it (и песням, под которые его танцевать: «которые должны быть использованы в нем»; to use – использовать), so that he could tell his people (чтобы он мог передать: «рассказать» их своему народу). And he gave him two raven feathers to wear (и дал он ему два черных пера; raven – ворон; иссиня-черный; цвета воронова крыла), as a sign that he came from the Sun (как знак того, что он посланник Солнца: «пришел от Солнца»), and a very wonderful robe (и чудесную мантию). And he gave him a magic flute and a wonderful song (и дал он ему волшебную флейту и чудесную песню), with which he could charm the heart of the girl he loved (которой он мог бы очаровать сердце той девушки, которую он любил).

taught [tɔ:t], raven ['reɪvn], feather ['feðǝ], heart [hɑ:t]

He taught Star-Boy the secrets of the dance and the songs to be used in it, so that he could tell his people. And he gave him two raven feathers to wear, as a sign that he came from the Sun, and a very wonderful robe. And he gave him a magic flute and a wonderful song, with which he could charm the heart of the girl he loved.

So Star-Boy returned to his people (и вот Звездный Мальчик вернулся к своему народу), the Blackfeet of the plains (племени Черноногих с равнины), running along by the Milky Way (пробежав по Млечному пути), the short, bright path to the earth (этой короткой, яркой тропинке до /самой/ земли). When he had taught them the secret of the Sun Dance (когда же он научил их секрету Танца Солнца; to teach – учить), he married the girl he loved (он женился на девушке, которую любил), and the Sun took them back to live with him in the sky (и Солнце забрал их жить вместе с ним на небо).

returned [rɪ'tɜ:n], people ['pi:pl], taught [tɔ:t], married ['mærɪd]

So Star-Boy returned to his people, the Blackfeet of the plains, running along by the Milky Way, the short, bright path to the earth. When he had taught them the secret of the Sun Dance, he married the girl he loved, and the Sun took them back to live with him in the sky.

And he made him bright and beautiful (и сделал он его ярким и прекрасным), just like his father Morning Star (точно подобным его отцу Утренней Звезде = точно таким же, как…), and gave him work to do (и дал ему работу). Sometimes the father and son can be seen together in the sky (иногда в небе можно было видеть вместе отца и сына); the people of earth sometimes call the father Venus, and the son Jupiter (люди на земле иногда зовут отца – Венерой, а Сына – Юпитером), but Indians call them Morning Star and Little Morning Star (но индейцы называют их Утренней Звездой и Малой Утренней Звездой).

And since that time (и с тех пор), once a year (один раз в год), the Blackfeet of the plains hold the Sun Dance that their sick may all be healed (племя Черноногих с равнин устраивает Танец Солнца, чтобы все, кто болеет: «их больные» могли исцелиться: «быть исцеленными»), as it was promised to Star-Boy by the Sun God in the old days (как было обещано Звездному Мальчику Богом Солнца в стародавние времена).

work [wɜ:k], Venus ['vi:nǝs], Jupiter ['ʤu:pɪtǝ], Indian ['ɪndɪǝn]

And he made him bright and beautiful, just like his father Morning Star, and gave him work to do. Sometimes the father and son can be seen together in the sky; the people of earth sometimes call the father Venus, and the son Jupiter, but Indians call them Morning Star and Little Morning Star.

And since that time, once a year, the Blackfeet of the plains hold the Sun Dance that their sick may all be healed, as it was promised to Star-Boy by the Sun God in the old days.
