 Not long afterwards I agreed to be searched by two of his officers. Whatever they took from me would be given back when I left the country, I was told. I picked up the two officers and put them into my coat pockets.

They made a list of everything they saw (они сделали = составили опись всего, что увидели; list – список, перечень, опись) and gave it to the Emperor (и отдали ее императору). I later translated this list into English (позднее я перевел эту опись на английский язык). This is what it said (вот, что она гласила):

 They made a list of everything they saw and gave it to the Emperor. I later translated this list into English. This is what it said:

“In the right coat pocket of the Great Man Mountain (for so I translate “Quinbus Flestrin”), we found only one large, rough piece of cloth. This cloth is big enough to be a carpet in Your Majesty’s chief room of state.

“In the left pocket we saw a huge silver box (в левом кармане мы увидели громадный серебряный ящик/сундук) which we were not able to open (который мы не могли открыть). We asked the Man Mountain to open it (мы попросили Человека-Гору открыть его) and one of us stepped in (и один из нас ступил/вошел внутрь; step – шаг; to step – ступать, шагать).  “In the left pocket we saw a huge silver box which we were not able to open. We asked the Man Mountain to open it and one of us stepped in. He found himself up to his knees in a sort of dust which made us both sneeze.

“In his right waistcoat pocket (в правом кармане жилета/камзола; waist – талия; waistcoat – жилет; камзол /без рукавов/) we found a bundle of thin white sheets of paper (мы нашли стопку тонких листов бумаги), folded over one another (сложенных один на другой).  “In his right waistcoat pocket we found a bundle of thin white sheets of paper, folded over one another. This bundle was about the size of three men. It was tied with strong rope and marked with black figures. We believe that this was writing. Each letter was half the size of our hand.

“In the left waistcoat pocket there was a sort of tool with twenty long poles. We believe the Man Mountain uses this to comb his hair.

“In the large pocket on the right side of his trousers (в большом кармане с правой стороны его штанов) we saw a hollow tube of iron (мы увидели полую железную трубу: «трубу из железа»), about the length of a man (длиной примерно с человека), fastened to a strong piece of wood (прикрепленную к крепкому куску дерева).  “In the large pocket on the right side of his trousers we saw a hollow tube of iron, about the length of a man, fastened to a strong piece of wood. There was another of the same kind in the left pocket.

“There were several round flat pieces of white and red metal in the smaller pocket on the right side. Some, which seemed to be silver, were so large and heavy we could hardly lift them.

“In the left pocket there were two black tubes of strange shape (в левом кармане были две черные трубы странной формы). In each of these, there was a flat piece of metal (в каждой из них находится металлическая пластина: «плоский кусок металла»).  “There were two pockets we could not enter, because they were squeezed closed by his large body. He called these pockets his fobs. A large silver chain hung out of the right fob. There was a wonderful kind of engine hanging at the end of the chain. It was round, one side silver and the other some transparent metal. He put this engine to our ears. It made a noise like a watermill. We guessed that it was either some unknown animal, or a god. We believe that it is a god because he told us that he seldom does anything without referring to it.

 “From the left fob the Man Mountain took out a net, almost big enough for a fisherman. It opened and shut like a purse. We found several pieces of yellow metal inside it. They must be of immense value if they are real gold.

“Having searched all his pockets (обыскав/осмотрев все его карманы), as Your Majesty commanded (как повелело Ваше Величество), we noticed a leather belt around his waist (мы заметили кожаный пояс вокруг его талии).  “Having searched all his pockets, as Your Majesty commanded, we noticed a leather belt around his waist. There was a sword, the length of five men, hanging on the left side. On the right, hung a bag divided into two parts. Each part was big enough to hold three men. In one of these, were several balls of very heavy metal, about the size of our heads. The other held black grains of no great weight. We were able to hold about fifty of them in the palms of our hands.

“This is an exact list of what we found on the body of the Man Mountain (такова точная опись найденного нами: «/того/, что мы нашли» на теле Человека-Горы), who was polite and showed respect (который был вежлив и проявлял /к нам/ уважение; to show – показывать; проявлять, выказывать).

 “This is an exact list of what we found on the body of the Man Mountain, who was polite and showed respect.

“Signed and sealed on the fourth day of the eighty-ninth month of Your Majesty’s reign.

This list was read out to the Emperor (эта опись была зачитана императору; to read out – читать вслух /документы, объявления/; зачитывать, оглашать).  This list was read out to the Emperor. He then commanded me to give up certain things. First he called for my sword. He had ordered three thousand soldiers to surround me at a distance with their bows and arrows ready to fire. I pulled out my sword. Although a little rusty from sea water, it was still bright. Immediately all the soldiers gave a shout of terror and surprise. His Majesty ordered me to put it back in its cover and to put it gently on the ground.

He then demanded one of the iron tubes (потом он потребовал одну из железных труб). These were my pistols (это были мои пистолеты). I took one out, filled it with gunpowder (я вынул один, наполнил = зарядил его порохом; gun – огнестрельное оружие: ружье, пистолет и др.; powder – порошок; /gunpowder/ порох) and fired it in the air (и выстрелил в воздух).  He then demanded one of the iron tubes. These were my pistols. I took one out, filled it with gunpowder and fired it in the air. The astonishment was even greater than at the sight of my sword. Hundreds of people fell down as if they had been killed. I gave up both my pistols and then my bag of powder and bullets.

I also gave up my watch (я также отдал часы), which the Emperor was very curious to see (которые императору было очень любопытно увидеть; curious – любопытный; любознательный; проявляющий любопытство).  I also gave up my watch, which the Emperor was very curious to see. He was amazed at the continuous noise it made, and the motion of the minute hand. I then gave up my silver and copper money, my purse with nine large pieces of gold, my knife and razor, my comb, my silver snuff box and my handkerchief.

My sword, pistols and bag (сабля, пистолеты и сумка) were taken away in carriages (были увезены на повозках; carriage – коляска; экипаж; повозка) to His Majesty’s stores (в арсенал его величества; store – запас, резерв; пакгауз, склад; stores /мн. ч./ – склад; арсенал; цейхгауз).  My sword, pistols and bag were taken away in carriages to His Majesty’s stores. The other things were given back to me. I had one private pocket which had escaped their search. It held a pair of spectacles, a pocket telescope and several other little things I felt I didn’t have to show them. I was afraid they might get lost or damaged if I gave them up.

The Emperor and his people became less afraid of me (император и его народ стали меньше меня бояться) because of my gentleness and good behaviour (благодаря моей кротости и доброму поведению; gentle – благородный; мягкий, добрый; кроткий).  The Emperor and his people became less afraid of me because of my gentleness and good behaviour. I hoped I would be set free in a short time. Sometimes I would lie down and let five or six of these people dance on my hand, or let the boys and girls play “hide and seek” in my hair. I had made good progress in speaking and understanding their language.

One day they entertained me with a show (однажды они развлекали меня представлением; to show – показывать; show – показ; спектакль; шоу, представление).  One day they entertained me with a show. I enjoyed the tight-rope dancers most. They performed on a fine white thread about two feet long and one foot from the ground. This skill is only practised by people who are candidates for important jobs at Court. They are trained in this skill from their youth.

When a job becomes free (когда /какая-нибудь/ должность становится вакантной), five or six candidates entertain the Emperor and his Court with a tight-rope dance (пять или шесть кандидатов развлекают императора и двор танцами на канате). Whoever jumps the highest without falling gets the job (кто прыгнет выше всех, не упав, /тот/ получает /эту/ должность).  When a job becomes free, five or six candidates entertain the Emperor and his Court with a tight-rope dance. Whoever jumps the highest without falling gets the job. Very often the chief Ministers themselves are commanded to show their skill to let the Emperor know they have not lost their ability. Flimnap, the Treasurer, is able to perform somersaults on a rope one inch higher than any other lord in the Empire. My friend, Reldresal, Principal Secretary for Private Affairs, is the next best after the Treasurer in my opinion.

One of the King’s cushions, which fortunately lay on the ground, had broken his fall.

 There is another amusement which is only shown to the Emperor, the Empress and the Prime Minister on special occasions. The Emperor rewards the best performers with silk threads: a blue, a red and a green. In this performance, the Emperor holds a stick in his hands. One by one, the candidates jump over the stick or creep under it backwards and forwards. Whoever performs with the greatest agility is rewarded with the blue silk. The red is given to the next and the green to the third. They wear this silk wrapped twice around their middle. Only the most important persons of the Court wear one of these belts.

I amused the Emperor one day in an unusual way. I asked for several sticks two feet high. I fixed nine of these firmly in the ground in a large square. I then tied my handkerchief to the nine sticks. I pulled it on all sides until it was as tight as a drum.

They divided into two sides (они разделились на два отряда; side – сторона; команда /как одна из сторон состязания/) and performed make-believe battles (начали изображать баталии «проводили притворные/ненастоящие сражения»; to make believe – делать вид, притворяться; симулировать /какую-либо деятельность/; воображать себя кем-либо /особенно о детях в играх/). The Emperor was so delighted (император пришел в такой восторг: «был так/настолько восхищен») that he ordered the entertainment to be repeated on several other days (что приказывал повторять /это/ развлечение еще несколько раз: «в некоторые другие дни»; to entertain – занимать, развлекать).

Only Skyresh Bolgolam was against it (против был только Скайреш Болголам). He didn’t like me (он меня невзлюбил; to like – любить, нравиться), but finally he, too, agreed (но в конце концов он тоже согласился).
